Active implantable medical devices have played significant role in providing wide range of therapies to patients with heart diseases, those who suffer from severe spasticity, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, or have hearing or visual impairment as well as patients with diabetes. Devices that are currently in the market include pacemakers, Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs), neurostimulators, cochlear implants, retinal implants, implantable drug delivery systems, glucose sensors, among others. Active implantable medical devices are complex real-time systems that require innovative multi-disciplinary engineering solutions including mechanical, RF, extremely low power custom electronics, biomaterial compatibility, sterilizations techniques, software, and advanced manufacturing. These devices often require extensive clinical trials and face long regulatory approval process. The presentation will provide an overview of these devices and highlight some of the innovative engineering solutions that have been incorporated.
Varaz Shahmirian, Ph.D
Dr. Shahmirian is the Director, Engineering & Technology, of the UCLA Extension. He has extensive experience in design and development of active implantable devices, medical device product development, systems engineering, technical leadership, and project management. He holds nine patents in medical device technologies. Dr. Shahmirian received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University, and his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University.
